Semi truck theft prevention is often an afterthought. Most talk about theft is about cargo and fake brokers. But some thieves want the tractor itself, or the trailer, or the parts. Losing the truck means losing your income until it is found or replaced. The good news is that a few simple habits make your truck a much harder target. Here they are.

Why the tractor is a target

A tractor is worth a lot of money, it can be driven away, and its parts can be sold. A trailer can be hooked up and pulled off in minutes if nothing stops it. Thieves look for the easy one: a truck in a dark corner, unlocked, with nobody around.

You cannot make a truck impossible to steal. You can make it slower and riskier to steal than the next one. That is often enough.

Semi truck theft prevention: where you park

  1. Park in lit, busy places when you can. Truck stops with lights, cameras and people around are better than an empty lot or the side of a ramp.
  2. Park where you can see the truck, if you are stepping away for a meal.
  3. Back into the spot or park so the trailer doors face a wall or another trailer, when the lot allows it.
  4. At home or the yard, use a fenced, lit area if you have one.
  5. Do not leave a loaded trailer alone longer than you must.

Locks and devices that help

  • Lock the doors every time. Even for a quick stop. Take the keys with you.
  • Fifth wheel lock. It helps stop someone from hooking up to your trailer when you drop it.
  • Gladhand locks. Gladhands are the air hose connectors. A lock on them helps stop someone from connecting air to move the trailer.
  • Steering wheel or brake locks for the tractor.
  • A GPS tracker. Many trucks already have one through the ELD or the telematics. Know how to see its location from your phone.
  • A kill switch or immobilizer, if a mechanic installs it right.

Keep things out of sight

  • No keys left in the cab. Not under the mat, not in the visor.
  • No papers left on the dash with your company information.
  • No valuables in view. A laptop or phone on the seat invites a break-in.

Be ready if it happens

Theft is stressful. Having the facts ready makes the first hour easier:

  • Save your VIN, plate numbers and unit numbers somewhere outside the truck: your phone, your email, your office.
  • Keep photos of the truck and trailer, including any marks or damage that make them easy to know.
  • Know how to reach your GPS provider to get the last location.
  • Call the police right away and get a report number.
  • Call your insurer and your agent the same day.

What about insurance?

Theft of the truck itself is usually a physical damage question, the coverage for your own truck and trailer. Whether theft is part of your physical damage coverage, and what deductible applies, depends on your policy. Check your declarations page or ask your agent. Our article on physical damage coverage explains the basics. If the load is the target, read our article on cargo theft and freight fraud.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the truck running and unlocked for "just a minute."
  • Dropping a trailer with no locks in an open lot.
  • Keeping the only copy of your VIN inside the truck.
  • Assuming theft is covered without checking your policy.
