What happened

A trailer theft in California shows how fast a yard can be emptied. Two trailers with Nvidia branding were stolen from the warehouse of PlusAI, a self-driving truck company, in Fremont, California. The theft was found at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 24, 2026. CDLLife reported it on Sept. 28.

Security video showed two unknown semi trucks driving around the property. The thieves brought their own trucks, hooked the trailers and drove off.

They got a surprise. There was no computer gear inside. The trailers held 20 tons of sand. The company uses the sand to act like real freight when it tests its self-driving trucks.

The trailers turned up a few days later, parked near an office in nearby Newark, California. A friend of a company executive spotted them and sent a photo. Police helped get them back. The doors had been forced open, but the sand was still there.

A company leader said the big, visible branding probably made the thieves think something valuable was inside. No one had been arrested, and police were still investigating.

What it means for owner-operators

This one ended with a laugh. Most do not. The lesson is serious.

First, thieves pick targets by what they see. A famous brand on a trailer, a high-value load, or a trailer that sits in the same place every day can draw attention.

Second, they do not need your tractor. With their own truck, they can hook a dropped trailer in minutes. A trailer left alone in a yard, a lot or a truck stop is an easy target.

Third, cameras help after the fact. Here, the video showed the trucks. But the trailers came back because someone noticed them and spoke up.

For small carriers, a stolen trailer can mean a lost load, a lost customer and days without income.

What to do next

  • Use a kingpin lock on any dropped trailer, and a good lock on the doors.
  • Park in a fenced, lit and watched yard when you can. Do not leave loaded trailers in open lots.
  • Put a GPS tracker on your trailers so you can find them fast.
  • Keep photos, VINs and plate numbers of your trailers ready for police.
  • Do not post pictures or details of your loads on social media.
  • Know what your cargo and physical damage coverage includes before a theft. Our guide to trucking insurance coverage explained breaks it down.
