What happened
Cargo theft with cloned documents hit a load in Illinois. Police say thieves copied the shipping papers for a load of glycerin. Then they used the fake papers to send the trailer to a different place.
The load was 75 drums of food-grade glycerin. Glycerin is a thick liquid used to make food and medicine. The load was worth about $60,000.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office got a tip about the stolen shipment on Sept. 17. Deputies tracked the truck. They found the trailer in Thornton, Illinois, south of Chicago.
No one has been arrested yet. The investigation is still open. The story was reported on Sept. 30 by CDLLife.
What it means for owner-operators
This kind of theft does not need a broken lock. The thieves did not have to force anything. They only needed papers that looked real.
That is why it is dangerous for small carriers. A driver can do everything right and still be sent to the wrong address. A fake email or a fake rate confirmation can look just like the real one.
When a load disappears, the trouble does not stop with the thief. The shipper wants answers. The broker wants answers. Your insurer will ask what you checked before you moved the load. Good habits can protect your name and your business.
This happened in Illinois, but the trick works anywhere. Texas is one of the busiest freight states in the country. Thieves follow the freight.
What to do next
- Treat any last-minute change of address as a red flag. Stop and check before you move.
- Call the shipper or broker yourself. Use a phone number you already had, not one in the new email or message.
- Compare the new papers with the first ones. Look at names, addresses, load numbers and email domains.
- Never drop a load at a place you cannot confirm.
- Keep a record of every call and message about the change.
