What happened

Commercial insurance prices are expected to ease for buyers heading into 2027. That is what insurance executives said in a report Business Insurance published on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026.

The executives spoke last week at the Insurance Leadership Forum in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers sponsors that meeting.

Here is what they said:

  • Property insurance is getting cheaper. This is the coverage for buildings and what is inside them. Marc Kunney of EPIC Insurance Brokers & Consultants said cuts of about 20% are still being reached on simple risks. Harder property risks are seeing cuts of 5% or more.
  • Why: there are a lot of insurers with money to put to work, and they are competing for business.
  • It should continue. Ryan Barber of Aon said property rate cuts will likely go on through 2027, though maybe at a slower pace.
  • Liability is still going up, but more slowly. Pat Donnelly of Willis said primary general liability rates are rising by low single digits.
  • Commercial auto is still hard. Mr. Kunney named commercial auto and excess and umbrella liability among the lines that remain challenging. The reason is that claims keep getting bigger.

Alex Wells, CEO of Zurich U.S., said competition should keep liability coverage from turning into "a really hard market."

What it means for owner-operators

Be clear about one thing. This is not a report about truck insurance prices dropping. Commercial auto, the coverage your truck runs on, is still on the hard list.

The good news is the direction. More insurers want business. When they compete, buyers have more room to compare.

Do you own a shop, a yard, an office or a small warehouse? That is property coverage, and that is where prices are falling the most.

No one can promise what your own price will be. It depends on your record, your claims, your equipment and what you haul. But this is a better market to shop in than the one of a few years ago.

What to do next

  • Start your renewal early. Give yourself time to compare more than one option. Our truck insurance renewal checklist lists what to have ready.
  • Ask about your property coverage if you own a building, a shop or a yard. That is the line where prices are moving down.
  • Keep your record clean. Insurers are still careful with commercial auto. Fewer violations and fewer claims help your case.
  • Know what each coverage does before you compare. Read our trucking insurance coverage guide.
  • Do not cut coverage just to save. Compare the same limits side by side.
