What happened
A fuel tanker rollover shut an East Texas intersection on Sunday. An 18-wheeler carrying about 5,500 gallons of fuel turned over late Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2026. It happened at North Loop 485 and Highway 271 in Gladewater, Texas. KLTV reported the story.
The Gladewater Fire Department came to the scene. Hazmat crews from the Longview Fire Department came too. Hazmat means hazardous materials, like fuel or chemicals.
The good news: no fuel spilled. Not in the crash, and not during the cleanup. No injuries were reported.
Two towing companies, Fuller Towing and Stevenson Towing, set the truck back on its wheels. Then they took it off the road. The report did not say what caused the rollover.
What it means for owner-operators
This one ended well. But a rollover with a full load of fuel is one of the most serious things that can happen on the road. It can close a road for hours. It can bring in fire crews and hazmat teams. If fuel spills, the cleanup can be big and costly.
We do not know what caused this crash, and we will not guess. But rollovers in general are a known risk for any tall, heavy truck. Tankers carry extra risk because liquid moves inside the tank. When you turn or brake, the load can slosh and push the truck. Many rollovers happen at turns, ramps and intersections, not only on the open highway.
Gladewater sits on busy East Texas routes near Longview. Highway 271 and Loop 485 see trucks every day. Any driver who runs these roads should know the spot.
What to do next
- Slow down well before turns, ramps and intersections. Posted speeds on ramps are for cars.
- Brake before the curve, not in it. Keep steering smooth.
- If you pull a tanker, remember the load keeps moving after you stop or turn.
- Check your tires, brakes and suspension often. Small problems add up in a turn.
- Rest when you need to. A tired driver reacts late.
