What happened
Progressive's Keys to Progress program just put an Army veteran behind the wheel of his own truck. Fahad Al-Kadhim of Macomb, Michigan, received a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia, The Trucker reported on Sept. 22. He plans to use it to launch his own trucking business.
Al-Kadhim has a long record of service. He worked as an interpreter and translator for the U.S. Marines and the Army during combat operations. Later, in the Army National Guard, he trained as a truck driver. Today he is an experienced commercial driver and a trainer.
Keys to Progress is run by Progressive, the insurance company, from its headquarters in Mayfield Village, Ohio. The program honors veterans who are connected with veteran-focused groups, and it gives them vehicles to help start their own businesses. Partners on this award included About Velocity, 1-800-Charity Cars, Insurance Auto Auctions and Veracity Research Co. Investigations, a veteran-owned company.
Al-Kadhim said he is deeply grateful for the chance to follow his dream of owning a trucking business.
What it means for owner-operators
The hardest step in trucking is often the first one: getting your own truck. A tractor is the biggest cost a new owner-operator faces. Programs like this one remove that wall for a few people, and they remind the whole industry that veterans bring real skill to the road.
It is also good news to see an insurance company invest in new small carriers instead of only pricing their risk. New authorities usually pay more for insurance in their first years, so every bit of help at the start counts.
A free truck is only step one, though. Every new carrier still needs a USDOT number, MC authority, a BOC-3, UCR and the right insurance filings before the first load. Missing one piece can keep a new truck parked.
