What happened

A semi-truck investment fraud case is now in federal court. Kristopher Lunsford of Henderson, Nevada, faces federal criminal charges. The SEC (the Securities and Exchange Commission) also filed a civil case. His companies AKL Transport and Southern Truck Leasing are part of the case.

FreightWaves reported the story on Sept. 27, 2026.

Here is how the pitch worked, according to the charges. People bought truck leases for $25,000 to $40,000 each. They were promised a guaranteed weekly payment of $1,000 to $1,250. They did not have to work. He said he would buy the trucks, hire drivers, get insurance and run the fleet.

The SEC says the fleet of 2,000 trucks was greatly overstated. It says the business worked like a Ponzi scheme. That means money from new investors paid the older ones.

The criminal case covers more than $105 million raised from about December 2023 to May 2025. The SEC case covers more than $127 million. About 765 people invested across the country, many around Tampa, Florida.

Prosecutors say about $75 million went to earlier investors. More than $25 million went to personal spending. Only about $2 million went to running trucks.

He faces six counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering. These are charges, not a conviction. A court will decide.

What it means for owner-operators

This scam used the good name of trucking to get money. Many of the people who lost money were not truckers. But the pitch sounds a lot like offers that reach drivers and their families too.

The warning sign is simple: a guaranteed weekly check for doing nothing. Real trucks have real costs. Fuel, repairs, drivers and insurance all come first. Nobody can promise the same payout every week.

There is also a lesson for your own business. A real truck operation has a USDOT number, real insurance and trucks you can see and check.

What to do next

  • Be careful with any "passive income" truck offer that guarantees weekly payments.
  • Ask to see the truck, the title and the USDOT number. Look up the company on the FMCSA SAFER website.
  • Ask for proof of insurance for the truck, and call the insurance agency to confirm it.
  • Talk to someone you trust before you sign or send money.
