What happened
Texas auto insurance just got more open. On Oct. 16, Insurance Journal reported that the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI, the state insurance regulator) launched a new public tool.
The tool shows why insurers declined, canceled or did not renew personal auto and home policies. You can search by ZIP code. It shows how many vehicles are insured, plus the number of nonrenewals, cancellations and declinations in that area.
According to Insurance Journal, the most common reason for a declined auto policy is the make and model of the vehicle.
The tool exists because of House Bill 2067, a Texas law passed in 2025. It makes insurers report this data to TDI. It also makes them give you written reasons when they decline, cancel or do not renew your home or auto policy.
What it means for owner-operators
This tool covers personal policies, not commercial truck insurance. TDI says the data includes personal auto and home policies from April 1, 2026.
Still, it matters to you. Your pickup, the family car and your house are part of your money picture. A surprise nonrenewal at home costs time you do not have on the road.
The reasons on TDI's list are useful to know:
- Claims history and driving record
- Credit or insurance score
- Not paying premiums on time
- Where the vehicle or home is located
- The make and model of the vehicle
Many of the same things come up when you shop for any insurance. A clean record and on-time payments help. Now you can see what is driving decisions in your own ZIP code.
What to do next
- Look up your ZIP code on the TDI page for declined, canceled and nonrenewed policies.
- Read any notice you get. The law says the insurer must tell you the reason in writing.
- Have questions? TDI's Help Line is 800-252-3439, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.
- Pay on time and keep your record clean. It helps on your personal and business policies.
- Getting ready to renew your truck policy? Our truck insurance renewal checklist shows what to gather.
