What happened
Texas insurance rates are starting to come down for some homes and cars. That is good news for many families, including trucking families.
Carrier Management reported it on Oct. 8, 2026, with numbers from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). TDI is the state agency that oversees insurance in Texas.
Here is what TDI counted since July 1, 2026:
- Homeowners insurance: rate cuts averaged 4.3%. They reach about 700,000 policyholders.
- Auto insurance: rate cuts reach about 4.4 million policyholders.
Some examples from the report:
- ASI Lloyds (Progressive) cut home rates 6% for 71,000 policyholders.
- Texas Farm Bureau Mutual cut home rates 5.2% for 133,000 policyholders.
- Auto Club County Mutual cut auto rates 3% for 235,000 policyholders.
- Loya Insurance Company cut auto rates 10.3% for 39,000 policyholders.
Nearly 160 companies sell auto and home insurance in Texas.
Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford called the lower filings an encouraging sign. She said some relief is starting to reach the market.
What it means for owner-operators
This news is about personal insurance: your house and your family car or pickup. The report did not include commercial truck insurance. So it does not tell you anything about the policy on your rig.
Still, it matters to you. Most owner-operators pay for a home, a family car and a truck. Any break on the home or car bill leaves more room in the budget.
Lower filings do not mean every policy gets cheaper. Your price still depends on your company, your area, your record and your claims.
What to do next
- Look at your renewal notice for your home and car when it arrives. Compare it to last year.
- Ask your agent if your company filed a lower rate.
- Shop around if your price did not move. Many companies compete in Texas.
- Keep your driving record clean. It helps on both your personal and your commercial policies.
- Review your truck policy too. Our trucking insurance coverage guide explains the main coverages in plain words.
We will share it when there is news on commercial truck rates.
