What happened

Texas insurance cancellations are now easier to understand. On Sept. 25, 2026, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI, the state agency that watches insurance companies) launched a free webpage that shows why insurers decline, cancel or do not renew policies.

You can pick a reporting period, a ZIP code and a policy type. The page then shows how many policies are active and how many were declined, canceled or not renewed, and the reasons companies gave. It is summary data for the whole market, not a list by company.

Right now it covers home lines: homeowners, dwelling, condo, mobile home, renters and flood. TDI says the first report on auto insurance is expected in October 2026.

More than 350,000 notices were uploaded through June. TDI plans to update the data at least every three months.

The tool comes from House Bill 2067, a 2025 Texas law. It makes insurers report this information and explain in writing when they decline, cancel or do not renew a home policy. Reporting started April 1, 2026.

Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford said the tool puts more information directly in consumers' hands.

What it means for owner-operators

This is good news for you as a Texan. Your house and your family car are part of your business safety net. If a policy gets canceled or not renewed, you can now see the most common reasons in your own ZIP code.

Be clear on one thing: this tool is about personal home policies now, and personal auto soon. It does not cover commercial truck policies.

Still, the lesson carries over to your truck. Insurers act on reasons, not on luck. Late payments, claims history, driving records and the condition of what is insured all matter. Knowing the reasons ahead of time gives you time to fix what you can before renewal.

What to do next

  • Visit the TDI page and look up your ZIP code to see the top reasons.
  • If you got a cancellation or nonrenewal notice, read the written reason and call your agent.
  • Watch for the first auto report in October.
  • Questions for the state? The TDI helpline is 800-252-3439, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.
  • For your truck, start early. Our truck insurance renewal checklist shows what to gather before your policy date.
