What happened
Truck parking in Texas just got federal money. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced $200 million for 14 truck parking projects in 12 states. Two of those projects are in Texas.
The money comes from INFRA, a DOT grant program for big freight and highway projects. This round is the part of INFRA set aside for commercial truck parking.
Here is what Texas gets:
- Los Indios, on the U.S.-Mexico border: about $9 million. It pays for access-road work for a planned truck parking lot with 305 spaces. The project rebuilds about 0.35 miles of Rio Grande Avenue to reach the new lot.
- Fort Worth, at Alliance on I-35W: about $5 million for about 100 new truck parking spaces. The plans include LED lighting and real-time parking technology.
Other awards went to Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs said the money will "deliver hundreds of new spots across the country." FMCSA is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency that sets the rules for trucks.
What it means for owner-operators
Every driver knows the problem. According to DOT, 40% of truck drivers spend more than an hour each day looking for parking. That is time you are not driving and not getting paid for.
A safe spot also matters for your truck and your load. When lots are full, drivers end up on ramps, shoulders or empty lots. A parked truck in a dark, open place is easier to hit and easier to steal from.
Los Indios matters for the Rio Grande Valley. It is a border crossing in Cameron County, between Harlingen and Brownsville. A 305-space lot near the border means more room to wait and rest close to the crossing.
Do not change your plans yet. DOT says each project still has to go through planning, federal grant steps and construction. Opening dates will be different for each place, and none were given.
What to do next
- Plan your stop before your clock runs low. Do not wait until the last hour to look for parking.
- Pick lit, busy places when you can. Good lighting helps protect your truck and your cargo.
- Lock up and check your seals every time you park for the night.
